Game Review (written by Kaikatsuna) Added on: 10/08/2007
I have to start by saying that, in general, I do not like any turned based strategy games, they absolutely bore me. So when I played romance of the three kingdoms two, I was surprised to find, that in spite of my bias, I very much enjoyed the game. My brothers and I would spend days at a time trying to beat each other. I must say that throughout the series there has not been an extreme amount of improvement or change, but it makes no difference to me.
The game was very enjoyable in its original format, a simple straight minded thinking game. You had the ability to rule a country, or be led by a ruler. You made all your own decisions, making it seem as if you were actually in ancient china. If you are well known enough, you can over rule an entire country and assume leadership. You can gain respect and wages with your skill or you can simply set out to destroy your opponents. The last option was always my personal choice, causing me always to lose, but I had fun.
There are some changes I would have made through the series that were not made. For instance in rotk seven you do see this change in the fighting contest, where you actually choose your attacks like rock paper scissors, rather than basing it simply on stats. I also enjoyed the upgraded battle engine, it creates a much more realistic seeming opponent, seeming to strategize and plan complex patterns and techniques far before you even execute your attack, much like a game of chess. Where in romance of the three kingdoms 2, the computer players seemed almost like they were random. You didn’t have much choice on what to do in battle, so you couldn’t have much strategy.
The main concept I wish they had kept, was everyone’s favourite aspect, the multiplayer aspect. I do believe that it makes romance of the three kingdoms two such a classic for me.
