Game Review (written by Shannon) Added on: 01/12/2008
Star Command: Revolution is a real-time strategy game that was created by the group formerly known as Metropolis Digital Incorporated (now Metropolis Software House). It was released by GT Interactive in the middle nineties for the DOS. It was re-released for Windows a few years later, and also was intended to spawn a sequel entitled Star Command X: Armada based on the campaign mode, but it never materialized.
Within the Zeta galaxy, there have become vicious interspecies conflicts because of the discovery of a valuable energy resource called Solinite. Control of the Solinite will make one of the previously peaceful species wealthy and powerful. This propels them into war with one another. Suddenly, a series of influential leaders from each of the races is assassinated. The ensuing unrest allows a tyrannical warlord, named Narvek, to swoop in and steal the galaxy from under the noses of the warring races. A small group of rebels, the Star Command, retaliate against Narvek and vow to restore peace to the galaxy. This revolution by the Star Command gives the game its title.
The user, in the campaign mode, controls a spacecraft that was stolen from Narvek by the Star Command. This mother ship serves as the user’s home base, instead of a planet. The mother ship has the capability of harvesting resources, manufacturing other ships, and creating space stations. The battles all occur in different sectors of the galaxy and in each mission, the player must harvest resources and create enough ships to vanquish the enemy battalions. The objectives in each mission vary, but most involve obliterating the enemy. After each mission is completed, the player receives bonuses, which range from increasing the speed of the mother ship’s harvesting or improving the overall firepower of the rebels. There are over thirty sectors in the game, and the missions in each sector increase in difficulty as the mother ship gets closer to Narvek’s base. Each mission is like starting afresh to some extent, since the mother ship is the only ship that can travel between sectors.
Star Command: Revolution is a nice little strategy game with a cool science fiction theme. The graphics aren’t bad, and the overall game play is pretty good as well. The game is very playable, challenging, and features an interface that makes it easy to learn, despite its many nuances. It is highly recommended for download and will provide a very satisfying play for most any gamer.
