Game Review (written by Chrissi) Added on: 11/25/2007
Stratego is a well-known strategy board game. You must find the other players flag while still defending your own. You are in control of forces that can vary between bombs to spies. Each turn you will have the chance to move one piece either vertically or horizontally. You can land of places where the other team is occupying and it will take that piece out of the battle. This depends though on the strength of the player in that block.
There are two gaming pieces that are unable to move. They would happen to be the bombs and the flags. The bomb will kill anyone who decides to attack them other then the miner has is capable of disarming them. The strongest piece out of the game would be the marshal that can only be removed by a spy and the bomb since the bomb is capable of blowing everything up but the miners.
Stratego resembles the famous game of chess quite well. Your only object of the game is to capture the flag before getting defeated by your opponent or eliminating all the other teams pieces.
When you first off playing a match your pieces will be placed in the four rows closest to you and you will be the only one capable of seeing the ranks of the pieces. The game is turn based. You have a chance to move one piece every turn trying to take over your opponent and capture the flag. You are unable to move a piece that is already occupied by your own team, but if you can defeat the other teams piece in a square you could move into that square. If both of the pieces happen to have the same rank they will both be removed. This can benefit in a few ways, its like committing suicide of your own player, but if you are able to strategize and feel that will assist in getting you further along, go for it!
There are rules that can be set up in the game that can change with every game you play. These can determine certain changes in the game that may assist in your team winning, but have the same chance of loosing. One of the great rules that can be changed is that the opponent is only able to see your rank when attacking, other than that it will remain invisible to them.
Stratego is a great remake of the classic game of chess. With the more intense combats and the level of detail gone into this game it has definitely topped chess in itself. Stratego does require a lot of strategizing and the ability to look ahead in the game and decide your next moves may assist in the winning of your games. If you’ve enjoyed chess like games in the past and are looking for a new challenge, this game will be great for you. With the added changes and new look, you will find yourself fascinated with this game for a very long time.
