Super Dune 2

PC
Genre:  Strategy    |     Year: 1994    |     Publisher: Freeware     |     Developer: PowerC
Game Review (written by Shannon) Added on: 11/17/2007
Super Dune 2 combines the best of all the Dune series real time war strategies, Dune 2, Super Dune, Dune 2000 and so forth. Most everything has been improved and beefed up to make this strategy a true challenge for the micromanager. Super Dune 2 picks up in about the same place that Dune 2 left off.
To start with, Super Dune 2 was not released by Westwood, the maker of Dune 2. It was created by fans of the Dune series and released around 1994.
The idea of the game goes unchanged with the ultimate goal being the conquest of the seemingly wasted land of Arrakis. While it follows the same basic format as its predecessors and the games its engine made popular (World of War craft, Red Alert, and so on) it contains several new elements that set it apart. The three major houses still exist in this installment, but their skills have been altered, and they do not play as major a role. Instead, enter the houses of Mercenary, Freman, and Sardaukar, all with unique skills that will offer more than one surprise for those familiar with Dune 2. So, while the original D2 loosely followed Frank Herbert’s novel of the same title, SD2 delves deeper into the book and incorporates more characters than just the original three Great Houses. For the most part, the smoothness of the game, graphics, units and music has not been altered from the original Dune 2. It is the special abilities of the houses that present the biggest challenge since the arsenal you might be used to have been tweaked. There is also more micromanagement, to the point of controlling individual units that some gamers may find too detailed. Still, the basic point is the same. Build armies, put them in groups, defend and attack.
Overall, this game is better and more realistic than Dune 2000 and is much more true to Dune 2. It is not the simplest game to play, and it is recommended for more advanced gamers. However, it is definitely worth a look, just to see the game format that started a revolutionary genre that has become popular beyond comprehension in the modern world.
