Game Review (written by Eric) Added on: 01/07/2008
This video game is actually a PC-adaptation of a board game with the same name. This game is a political strategy game set in post-Yeltsin Russia. The game is actually pretty shallow than other strategy games but it is still capable of providing entertainment for many hours.
At the star of the game, the computer will set the different factions in Russia and place influence tokens randomly on the map. After the computer sets the tokens of the different factions, each player will be given the opportunity to place two representatives in other parts of the map that are left unoccupied.
The computer will also randomly raise three uprisings in the map and the uprising will cause disruption in the economy of that region. Each faction has its own unique ability that has an effect on how the game is played out. The best way to win a game is to go against a faction for “influence tokens” that are placed in a region.
The game is divided into five phases and is turn-based. Players must make decisions based on the following important management categories: production, movement, trading, challenge and buying cards. Production involves gaining cash. Movement involves moving an uprising to different regions in the map. Trading involves swapping tokens or loaning moneys from allies. The challenge part involves competing against your opponents for control over a region and buying cards adds an element of surprise in the game. When you buy a card, you will receive a random card that can either be completely helpful or useless to you.
The outcome of your turn is affected by a host of different factors from inflation to the uprising in a particular region. You can also play special cards to help you in the game. The game actually involves both the art of waging wars and playing diplomacy.
The downside to the game is it can get a bit dragging especially during computer turns. It’s still a better game when played with a human opponent. The graphics could also do a lot of improvement because there were already strategy games released as the same year as this game that already contained interesting graphics and animation.
I still recommend this game to those who are uninitiated in the genre of strategy games. This game can provide many hours of gaming fun despite some parts of the game being wearisome. This game is still best played with other players rather than alone against the computer.
