I'm not sure how on earth I would be able to review a game that I had not even had the chance to download yet, but what the heck.
War Inc is a strange hybrid of a game. It has some of the real time strategy feel of the Command and Conquer, Warcraft, or Starcraft. Some of the game is spent taking your mercenary soldiers and trying to take objectives or sabotage other corporations. You play the role of CEO of a merchant company called, you guessed it, War Inc.
Only part of this game is spent in the actual combat sims though. A large part of whether or not you will be successful is how well you can manipulate the stock market and balance R&D spending with operational expenditures. Sometimes you will take a mission just in order to depress a particular company's stock so you can perform a hostile take over.
There are other merchant companies out there as well competing for contracts. Your reputation for success will dictate what types of offers you will get and what kind of terms you have to work with. That is the general feel for how the game functions.
This is a Dos/Win95 game though so you will have some issues trying
to run it if your computer is using Windows XP. Running the game in Compatibility Mode for Windows 95 does not seem to be a quick fix to get this game to run. It will take some work to see if you can get it to run at all outside of using an application to run a Virtual Machine. Due to the system requirements (P90, 16Mb Ram, and 110Mb HDD space) it should be simple for just about any system capable of running WinXP to run a virtual machine capable of running this game.
There was at one time a 1.1 version patch available from the distributor Interactive Magic. It was also on a couple of sites. The file name was WAR11.EXE. You may still be able to find it out some where. There is no support for this game any longer as it is about a decade or more in age. As a matter of fact, you will not be able to find any information about this game on the distributor's web site.
All in all, this is a fun game that I would like to be able to play again under WinXP but that may give a fight before allowing itself to be run in a WinXP environment.
