Game Review (written by Shannon) Added on: 12/22/2007
Star Trek: The Screen Saver is more than just a screen saver. It is a trivia game, interactive program, and comedic experience, cleverly disguised as a screen saver featuring everyone’s favorite characters from the classic seventies television series, Star Trek. The screen saver features animated clips and sound bytes from many of the characters, including Mr. Spock, Scotty, and of course Captain James T. Kirk.
Star Trek: The Screen Saver was originally released in the early nineties for Macintosh, but was quickly ported to the Windows format by Berkely. The game followed After Dark, a popular screen saving series, and was actually one of the first stand alone screen savers to be made available. It was released in 1992 when Star Trek: The Next Generation was resuscitating the love for classis Star Trek episodes. The screen saver portion was made to avoid the common problem of “burn-in,” which would occur if a screen displayed the same image for many hours without variation. The result would be ghost like image of that graphic, permanently seen on the screen because the computer monitor’s backing had been stripped by the steady flow of electrons. The screen saver provided a constantly moving and changing image to eliminate this damaging electron stream.
Star Trek: The Screen Saver features many feelies besides the actual screen saver. Spock will wander around the screen making Spock-esque remarks, particularly “fascinating” when he is viewing the icons on the desktop. The Scotty files give the actual specs of ships that were used for the series. The user can create his own Star Trek episode using digitized clips from actual shows. There is a trivia game that challenges the user to answer multiple choice trivia questions about the show in a set time limit. The user can watch Horta chasing red-shirted security guards through tunnels, and can use the fonts that are included on the screen saver - all of which are custom created and named with very Trekkie titles, such as Hortavetica.
In summary, this is a solid download, even for people who are not fans of the Star Trek series. It is witty, clever, colorful, and features more than just a moving screen to prevent burn in. It is highly interactive, features great sound clips and cool digitized graphics. Plus all the Enterprise favorites are available in some capacity, making it an awesome download for Trekkies. Beam it down, now.
